For some years the Institute did excellent work, but with the provision of greater facilities on the island, the work at Kowloon was abandoned. The building was afterwards used by the Eastern Scotia Masonic Lodge as rooms and as a club.
The Rosary Church standing in Chatham Road, Kowloon was blessed by the Rev. Father John G. Spada, on May 28, 1905. The generous donor was Dr. Antonio Simplicio Gomes who caused the church to be built at his own expense as a lasting testimony of his devotion towards the Blessed Virgin. On being informed of this gift, and of other gifts for charitable purposes, Pope Pius X created Dr. Gomes a Knight of the illustrious order of St. Gregory the Great.
The Hongkong Telegraph of May 29, 1905, has the following account: Yesterday a large number of the members of the Roman Catholic community and friends interested in church extension work attended the services held in Kowloon in connection with the blessing of the new Roman Catholic Church, which has been presented by Dr. Gomes. The Rev. Father Spada had considerably arranged for the launches to convey friends from Blake Pier to Kowloon. At 7:30 a.m. the ceremony of blessing the church was reverently performed, after which the Rev. Fathers Maria announced that Pope Pius had conferred on Dr. Gomes the knighthood of St. Gregory the Great.
"The recipient acknowledged the great honour in suitable terms, and feelingly stated that, while accepting the honour his one object had been to meet the urgent need of providing a better and more spacious church for the Catholic community in Kowloon and to honour the memory of his late parents and sister. The Solemn Mass was celebrated."
The architects of the building were Messrs. Palmer and Turner.
In the course of his sermon, the Rev. Father Spada said: "Besides having here with us, the Holy Eucharist the principal treasure of our faith, we will have the statue of the Blessed Virgin, the Mother of Jesus and our Mother, whose image dominating the church will remind us of her tenderness, her love and her benefits. The church is dedicated to her under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii." The central statue of the group represents our Lady who gives the Rosary to St. Dominic.
The other statue represents St. Catherine of Siena, the glory of Italy, whose life has been very eventful for the One Church on account of her splendid and supernatural deeds. The chapel is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, the holy precursor of Our Lord and also the special patron of the neighbouring Colony on account of the great favours obtained through his intercession.
